Medina Spirit cleared to run in Preakness

The reigning Kentucky Derby winner has been cleared to continue its pursuit of the Triple Crown. 

Per an Associated Press (h/t ESPN) story, Medina Spirit passed three rounds of prerace drug testing leading up to Saturday’s Preakness after the Derby winner tested positive for the steroid betamethasone following the Triple Crown’s first leg. Concert Tour, the other horse linked with legendary trainer Bob Baffert competing in Saturday’s marquee event, also tested negative for any banned substances. 

Earlier this week, Baffert denied any intentional wrongdoing and said via a released statement that an antifungal ointment used to treat Medina Spirit contained the steroid. While Kentucky racing rules permit betamethasone, it must be cleared by officials 14 days before a race. A second round of testing could ultimately void Medina Spirit’s Derby victory.
